Career guidance is a scientific subject area in which questions relating to the development and promotion of careers are addressed from different perspectives and disciplinary approaches. Career guidance is therefore not based on a disciplinary culture that is linked to a common foundation, i.e. specific concepts and models. Nor does it build on an overarching research interest and relevant research perspectives developed from this.
The relevance of pooling research findings in the field of career guidance prompted interested researchers to initiate a network in 2013. The WiN-BO academic network was launched at the Catholic University of Applied Sciences Cologne in summer 2014. Colleagues from twelve federal states and Austria are currently active.Since spring 2019, the network has been a partner in the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Berufsbildungsforschungsnetz (AG BFN).
The aim of the network is to stimulate the development of a common interdisciplinary specialist culture which, in addition to relevant publications, is also established through conferences, ongoing research collaborations and cross-university research projects. The aim is to contribute to strengthening the topic in academia. This includes increasing the acceptance of career guidance research, developing a community and, as a result, promoting a systematic scientific debate based on the bundled use of possible resources. So far, numerous symposia and joint contributions at specialist conferences have been realized, four network meetings have been held and two edited volumes on career guidance have been produced.
The current focus of work and research interests lies in the areas of diagnostics and instrument development as well as in the conception and evaluation of educational interventions. Furthermore, the qualification of actors in the transition from school to work is the focus of scientific work.
